Americans had become very familiar with a bruised and battered Rodney King. His videotaped beating by Los Angeles police was flashed repeatedly on television screens for months. Suddenly, Americans saw a different Rodney King.
A tearful King called for an end to the riots that rocked Los Angeles and the nation in the wake of an unexpected and (to many millions) incomprehensible verdict. King said he understood the anger but not the unrestrained racial violence that followed. Choking back tears, he asked, "Can we all get along?"
To help answer that wrenching question, THE WORLD & I looks at race relations in America, at how blacks and whites view each other, and at the shocked reaction of the rest of the world to the King verdict and the subsequent riots--the worst in 130 years.
This Special Report does not pretend to offer the solution, but the consensus of all who contributed and responded is clear: The American dream is in danger of becoming an American nightmare if we do not move quickly and decisively to resolve the accelerating racial crisis in our land.
