       The excerpt is set during the Christmas break of Ian's freshman year at college. Ian has returned home to find his parents completely overwhelmed with caring for three children orphaned in the wake of his brother's suicide. Soon Ian is overwhelmed as well with guilt over what he perceives as his responsibility of his brother's death. On the way home from his temporary job one night, his mind wrestling over his family's burdens, Ian has an encounter that changes his life.
       
        In the commentaries that follow, Poet and Novelist Cathryn Hankla gives an overview of the book, highlighting the portrait of courage developed through the book's central character. Literary scholar Joseph Voelker analyzes Tyler's narrative technique, showing how it achieves a power full illusion of intimate family memory. Literary critic Audrey Foote tells the personal story of Tyler herself, the studious daughter of Quaker parents, who grew up in religious communities in the Midwest and South.
