       The following two articles--as well as the statements published as sidebars in this symposium--are from interviews conducted at the Assembly of the World's Religions in San Francisco, California, in August 1990, by Lloyd Eby, an editor of the Currents in Modern Thought section of THE WORLD & I.
       
        This assembly brought together more than five hundred religious leaders, scholars, and ecumenists from some seventy nations and from all the major and numerous minority religions of the world to participate in ecumenical dialogue and to experience one another's religious practices and beliefs. The assembly concluded with most of the participants--including the many ecumenically minded Muslims who attended--pledging to support the new Interreligious Foundation for World Peace (IRFWP), whose formation had been announced during the assembly by its founder, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon. According to its founding statements, the IRFWP will be a forum through which religious people of the world will work to promote service, education, leadership, and cooperation and understanding among religions. It will sponsor educational programs, peace initiatives, service projects, and relief programs.
