       Shelter
       
        Last night a swallow
        built a nest inside
        my mouth. I will
        leave it undisturbed
        and breath through my
        nose. The bird will
        not hurt me, even
        with its feathers
        sharp as blades.
        Trust me, little one,
        because I trust you
       
       
       Man in a Drawer
       
        Is being dead that
        bad? You won't be
        hungry anymore, and
        the cops can't find
        you wrapped in news-
        paper like an old
        fish. And now how
        easy it is for you
        not having to stag-
        ger past the noses
        of angry dogs that
        smell their kind on
        your shoes. You
        have slept on
        ground that was
        colder than the
        drawer in which
        you lie, but you
        have never had
        quieter neighbors.
        In this sleep, you
        will not share
        the night with a-
        nother warm body
        that keeps you in
        touch with the
        people of the night.
