These articles concentrate on the stories of the common soldier,
whether from the North or South. Most were farmers or came from
small towns. In the beginning, the prevailing opinion was that the
war would last three months or less. Toward the end, some thought
it would go on forever. One dimension considered here is the often
forgotten civilian role during the war. What was happening in the
relatively peaceful areas of the North, and in the invaded parts
