A number of articles in this section cover the introduction and spread of slavery below the Mason-Dixon line and the gradual outlawing of slavery north of that line.  Others address the American Revolution, which brought independence and the proclamation that “all men are created equal” (except black slaves, who were counted as three-fifths of a person, according to the Constitution).  Still others describe Jacksonian democracy, abolitionism in the North, and the turmoil of the 1850s (Bleeding Kansas, John Brown’s Raid) that preceded the war itself.
